Nobody experiences a constant high in emotions. There is only 1 kind of people who don’t experience painful emotions like anger, sadness, anxieties, fear, envy etc. – dead people. However in our society we don’t give each other the permission to be human and the freedom to experience these negative emotions as well. But it is part of our human nature.
When we are kids we still give ourselves the freedom to be human and we live our emotions fully. We cry when we are hurt, we scream when we feel mistreated, and we laugh out loud when feel like it. But when we grow older we become aware of other people observing us, judging us and we take this permission from ourselves. But painful emotions are, as well as positive ones, part of human nature. And when we suppress these emotions we actually strenghten them. They intensify and try to get to the surface anyways.
We all need a space in our life in which we can be human. Whether it is with a good friend, people we care about or just with ourselves, when we are writing a journal. We have to give ourselves the permission to be joyful, scared, angry, sad, happy, stressed etc. We all need a space of honest acceptance.
So what if you experience envy towards your best friend? That in and of itself doesn’t make you a bad person. There is nothing good or bad about experiencing envy or any other negative emotion. There is nothing good or bad about experiencing anger or depression. It’s part of human natue. However the question is, how do I decide to act as a result of it. That’s where the moral domain enters. That’s where I can have moral or immoral behaviour. I can still experience envy towards my best friend and still act in a different way.
What if you truly gave yourself the permission to be human? Just imagine. Life becomes so much easier and simpler. Instead of fighting our nature, we accept it with all the emotions that come up.
